Kickstart your Reading Habit

Updated: Oct 23, 2020

We all know we should be reading more to enrich our lives but how many of us are actually investing time to build up our knowledge? Here are some tips to have you kick start your reading journey!

I used to struggle when it comes to reading, not that I have difficulty in reading but I can't find the time to do it. When time is available for me to read, it'll always be late at night when my eyes are closing and hence I read with my eyes closed!

Now that I'm in my habit of reading, I'm happy to get this habit into my routine and trust me, none of my reading takes place at home because the only books I read at home are children's books (When I'm reading to my son).

So how did I find time to read? I have 24hours a day as well and it's all about scheduling time in and prioritising. Knowledge and wisdom is one of my top 5 in my list of values hence I make it a point to read everyday!

I like the quote, if you want to change your life, change something you do daily. Here is how I manage to kick start my reading/learning journey

1. Know your Why

Are you hungry for knowledge? If yes, why? If no, why? The reason I started reading is because I know it is the fastest and affordable way to acquire knowledge. I want to know how people succeed and make their dreams come true, I want to know the mistakes made so that I will not be repeating it. The more knowledge I have, the more I can share with my readers and listeners and students. There is no reason why I shouldn't be hungry for knowledge

2. Make use of your time when you commute

I love to drive but driving robs time away from me as I can't read and drive at the same time. As a trainer and entrepreneur, I spend lots of time traveling and I have converted my traveling time to learning time. It is nice to look out the window and admire the scenery once again but I do not prefer to be on my phone surfing the net the whole time when i am traveling because every minute count! You will be amazed how fast you can complete a book if you read it during your commute time. As I mentioned, I do not do any reading at home because my attention will be on my family when I'm home. If I can read 2 books a month, you can do it or even do better than me!

For drivers out there, fret not! Audio books are easily accessible for you and you'll be surprised on how many chapters you can listen to within the time of a traffic jam! Try it and be amazed!

3. Spend time with people who inspire you

With the knowledge building up in you, it's time to invest in people. People will notice a difference in you as you become more confident in the topics and conversation that you engaged. Mix yourself with like-minded people whom you can exchange information and get yourself motivated and encouraged!

4. Start small and set small goals

New to reading? Set small goals and achieve them. Not an avid reader? Setting a goal to complete sets you up for failure. A chapter a day keeps the negativity away. A chapter is better than nothing. Struggling to find an hour a day to dedicate to reading? Start by focusing on the 10 mins you have!

5. Small subscription goes a long way

Besides reading, listening to podcast has been another way for me to enrich and educate myself. A premium subscription of Spotify makes learning an enjoyable process. I believe there are other platforms that offers free podcast so tap on it right now! When my eyes get tired for my errands and work, audio learning keeps me going. There is a vast mount of resources available out there so tap on it!

Are you ready to ditch your drama series on your phone and live a fulfilling life? Seeking a change in your life but doesn't seem to be working out? If you want to change your life, change something you do daily and reading is the first change you can have.
